6 Reasons to Kick Your Soda Habit

We've got 6 good reasons why sipping soda is a habit you should kick. We've got 6 good reasons why sipping soda is a habit you should kick. We've got 6 good reasons why sipping soda is a habit you should kick.Do you spend most days with a can of soda by your side? You might want to break that habit. Turns out, all soda -- even diet -- is bad you, and new research suggests it's especially harmful to women. Here are six reasons to give up soft drinks for good.

    1. Soda makes you fat. Both regular and diet soft drinks are tied to obesity. In one study, people who drank diet sodas had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference over a few years compared to those who skipped soft drinks.

Diet soft drinks are particularly insidious, says RealAge cofounder Michael F. Roizen, M.D. "Sweet diet soda fuels your desire for other sweets," he explains. It also has a "health halo" effect. "You view choosing a 'diet' drink as virtuous (all those calories saved!). So it feels like you can afford to reward that virtue with a hot fudge sundae."

8 easy ways to beat belly fat and help your heart.

    2. Soda boosts your risk of serious disease. The extra belly fat that often comes with a soft drink habit is linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A recent study in the Journal of Internal Medicine also tied a daily diet soda habit to a higher stroke risk.

    3. Regular soft drinks may cause cancer. New research from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health finds drinking two or more regular soft drinks per week may almost double your risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers speculate that the sugar overload from regular soda triggers insulin production that fuels cancer cell growth.

3 healthy ways coffee beats soda.

    4. It's bad for your teeth. Yep, your mom was right about this one. And here again, even diet soda is bad news because sugar isn't the worst offender in soft drinks. The big culprit is soda's high acid content: phosphoric, malic, citric, and tartaric acid strip tooth enamel. Citrus-flavored soft drinks are the worst -- they dissolve enamel up to five times more than colas.

    5. It's bad for your bones. The same acids that are bad for your teeth also coax calcium from your bones. That goes for regular and diet caffeinated soda. Can't give up your Diet Coke? Roizen recommends upping your daily calcium tally by an extra 20 mg for every 12 ounces of soda you sip.

Instead of soda, try this surprising sipper to build your bones.

    6. It's bad, even if you don't gain weight. New research from the American Heart Association finds that women are more vulnerable than men to the harmful effects of drinking two or more sugar-sweetened drinks -- including soda -- per day. Soda-sipping women are likely to have a larger waist size, higher "bad" LDL cholesterol, higher levels of triglycerides (harmful fatty acids that can cause heart disease), higher blood sugar, and lower "good" HDL cholesterol -- even if they don't put on a pound.

beer is extremely bad for you. It actually has the same health detriments as soda, but 10x as bad. Beer drinkers literally volunteer for heart disease and stroke.

I kicked pop about 2 years ago and haven't gone back, although that was mostly because that stuff makes my acid reflex disease 10 times worse and anyone with that will know what i'm talking about.
      • yup, i said that 2 months ago
did you lose any weight from quitting it ??

My acid reflex went crazy with pop or just about anything including water, totally cut out the pop, feel and breath noticeable better. Now my acid reflex is under control, smaller meals, yogurt, salads and drink some water. Thought I'd miss the pop, but when you feel this good, no way I miss the stuff.

Well this is nothing new. I think we all knew already soda is bad. Sugar period is bad. It destroys the immune system!!

Sugar is not bad! Sugar is the easiest thing to live on! Just don't sav out on it like anything else and you'll be just fine. We need glucose to live! Google ATP production or the glycolytic sequence for more info...

I agree with you Gary, white sugar is bad for you and so is high fructose corn syrup. We do need sugar, but honey and all natural sugars found in fruit are what the body needs, not refined white sugar.
      • GARY 2 months ago
Acturually Sara sugar is VERY bad for the immune system. I have HIV and was told by my specialist that sugar attacks the immune system. Sure a bit is ok in moderation. But I eat very little. Sonja I totally agree. Thats exactly what my nutritionalist told me. Eat natural sugar not refined stuff!!

Stopped drinking soft drinks a month ago, substituted yogurt for better digestion. Big difference, help reduce my acid reflux, breath noticeably better; feel better, body doesn’t ach as much. Really made a difference.

We're not hummingbirds, just don't drink pop every single day and you'll be fine. I enjoy my Coke every now and again, otherwise i'm just drinking water, coffee, milk, beer...hey there's plenty of options ;-)

Hardest part of dropping soda is when you're the only person trying to and the rest of the people you live with like to stockpile it when it goes on sale. Especially when they're the ones telling you to stop drinking it.

Diet soda contains aspartame which is made from genetically modified bacteria, many people become ill from consuming products containing it. You cant go wrong by sticking to drinking plenty of water.
      • Love Dove 2 months ago
Aspartame is harmless, bud. There have been lots of studies done on it and all have turned up negative in finding any harmful effects.

I've drunk diet soda for years, yet I've felt no ill effects. This claim that aspartame is made from genetically modified bacteria is ludicrous. Sources, please.

drinking plenty of water is fine if you can wear a leg bag.
      • A Yahoo! User 2 months ago
years ago - many - we were told butter was bad for us and margarine was better........I figured that anything which was a naturally occuring product was bound to be better for me - in moderation - than someone elses science project = margarine........same goes for aspartame........................|SCIENCE project - why ingest that stuff, sugar is bad, this stuff is worse, both will kill you in excess.

I'm trying to convince my friend to kick the pop-drinking habit aside, but she's not listening. Oh well, her body. At least she doesn't vent to me about her weight problem.
    • Vicky  •  2 months ago
Seriously, we know that it's bad. Why do I buy and drink soda? Maybe because soda seems to cost LESS than a bottle of WATER.

I beleive this to be true. I have consumed a considerable amount of pop in my time, mostly Coke Zero, Diet Coke, and Diet Ginger Ale. Last year I read up about this and decided I should quit, and did. I still have a large belly, and there is nothing to blame it on but that, I don't drink beer, or eat too much. I do have a lot of sugar cravings which are hard to control. But I have started looking at whats in the stuff and anything that contains glucose, fructose, or the like, I just don't eat anymore. I really beleive everyone should pay more attention to that.

Studies have also shown that soda pop pumped down the gullets of norway rats caused excessive farting.

I was once told by my dentist that my teeth were getting bad so I had to avoid pop, coffee, candy, etc. However she also said to avoid breads and grains for some reason I don't recall, and fruits and juices due to the citric acids. So I guess I was supposed to live on a diet of water and meat?

News flash - it ain't a pleasant truth but whatever your diet is, you are going to run into health problems of some sort sooner or later, our bodies are not built to last as long as we'd like. Sure you can take care of it better but you can't keep it going forever. And no matter what diet you stick to there is always the chance of catching some fatal disease.

Yes, be responsible, but also be realistic. Drinking a can of pop or two a week is not going to give you cancer.
