With Anne Hathaway's turn as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises coming to theatres this summer, we're beginning to notice a related trend on the red carpet - the rise of the catsuit. Elizabeth Banks took a calculated style risk that paid off at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in an Elie Saab ensemble with sheer panels, Rihanna borrowed from the boys in a slightly slouchy black Stella McCartney number, while newcomer Shailene Woodley also wore the designer's take on the slinky suit.

While a plummy merlot lip may seem like a slightly more autumnal trend, beauty stars have been using the shade to add edge and definition to otherwise bare faces. Lana del Rey made a dark lip look timeless with '40s screen siren waves at the MET Gala, Katy Perry paired a slightly purple-tinged hue with her lavender gown at the Billboard Music Awards, while Kate Bosworth used the colour to play up her ombré feathered frock at the MET Gala. Keep the look fresh by avoiding matte formulas, going for a bit of moisture without being too glossy.

For their appearances at the MET Gala this May, both Beyoncé and Diane Kruger opted for dramatic, sweeping gowns with feathery purple trains. Beyoncé made her (very late) entrance, in this unforgettable Givenchy couture design, while Diane Kruger paid tribute to Prada in custom original. This trend is ideal for those who'd prefer to skip the sparkle and opt for a more understated, yet elegant, look.

Far from the run-of-the-mill LBD, these looks prove that black is anything but basic. Zoe Saldana made an appearance at the CFDA Awards in a Prabal Gurung number with daring mesh cut-outs. While at the MET Gala Rooney Mara walked the red carpet in a floor-length Givenchy gown and Rihanna stunned in a textured crocodile look by the one and only Tom Ford.
The trick to wearing black: dare to bear expanses of skin via this season's peek-a-boo panel trend, in sheer fabrics like mesh and lace, or try all-over textures for added dimension.

While we may have thought dresses with dramatic slits had reached their saturation point (a la Angelina Jolie's pose at the Academy Awards) these looks from the Cannes Film Festival prove that the thigh-high slit can retain all of its drama and sex appeal without being over-the-top.
Freida Pinto shined in an embellished high slit gown by New York designer Michael Angel. Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev went for maximum impact in a glittery Elie Saab at the festival's amfAR Gala, while model Natasha Poly did double-duty with her skin baring deep-V and leg show.
