3 Tips to Make Your Flowers Last

Last night I had the wonderful privilege of participating in a flower arranging workshop with celebrity flower designer and author Michael Gaffney.

One of the biggest questions we had for the flower expert was: How do we make our fresh-cut flowers last longer? If you're going to splurge on flowers, whether it's for a special occasion or just to brighten up your home, you want them to last as long as possible, right?

Here are Michael's 3 tips for getting the most out of your floral arrangement:

    1. Hydration: Flowers wilt because they aren't hydrated enough. Instead of just giving them water through the stems, try turning the whole arrangement upside down and sticking it in a bucket of water for 30 minutes. This technique is especially effective for flowers that tend to dehydrate quickly, such as hydrangeas.

    2. Bleach: Michael told us that those packets that often come with flower arrangements can't really be absorbed through the stems because they're in powder form. Instead, put a little bit of liquid bleach in the water your flowers are resting in.

    3. Crowning Glory: Michael swears by this product, which works as a sealant and slows the deterioration of fresh flowers.

Put an aspirin in the water.

Is it the acid in the aspirin that helps? Just wondering.

I am not really sure to be honest, it was a suggestion I got from a gardener friend. Seems to work.

could someone please explain to me how you can cut angels? or even where you would find angels to cut?
      • Marvellous Maiden 3 months ago
Are you serious or just not understanding? You cut the stems at an angle, not straight across is the point being made here.
      • Joan 3 months ago
thanks for the help marvellous maiden, but I was being sarcastic about others poor spelling on here. They keep typing angels instead of angles!

We can't keep the flowers for months no matter what. But if you want to have your bouquet as a souvenir, just before they start to wilt, take them out of the water, hang them upside down to dry, fatsen them with clothes pins on a line. In a few weeks, you'll have beautiful dried flowers to keep as long as you want; this work especially well with roses, the ones we want to preserve the most. Great for a wedding bouquet.

I use a quart of lukewarm water, to one tablespoon of sugar, one teaspoon of lemon juice & 1/8 of a teaspoon, not more, of bleach. Can keep roses for almost 2 weeks. But the trick is, you have to change the water every day with the same receipe, & be sure that leaves do not ligure in the water. That can cause bacteria & a bad smell.

When working in catering I met alot of Rosedale Matrons and if I remember correctly from their arrangers (OMG lol) Roses & Peonies deeper slant cut under warm water, vase with one penny and luke warm water, daily water change and root trim they usually last about 6 days without looking peaked. A tiny bit of cider vinegar in water for Gerbera Lillies when they start looking sad like "help me" . In Bouquet use some bleach tiny bit cut all flowers and ferns on same angle and then arrange , make ferns shorter as they will suck up more moisture,in bouquets with day lillies, carnations, fuscia, etc spray bottle as well in dry room they should keep for a week well if you change the water before it gets stank....You had to put your nose in there didn't you?

I put a little 7up in the water (not Diet) when the water level is down a bit, replenish with more 7up.

Old family trick, place one or a couple of dirty dark pennies at the bottom of the vase. It truly works.

If they are wilting, crush up a Viagra tablet and put it in the water. They will come back to life....and no, Im not kidding.

Ok so if those packets don't even work, what is the point of including them with the flowers when you buy them? Why don't florists just tell you that then tell you how to preserve them longer when you get them home?

BLEACH!?!? doesnt that make flowers die?
    • coletteandderek  •  7 months ago
I find that if you wrap your tulips in newspaper then stand them in water overnight then display them they will stand straighter for longer.

I always use the flower food that comes with them. works well! :)

I cannot believe I am agreeing with a yahoo article!! lol I am a florist, and yes as bizarre as it sounds, we do often turn flowers upsi de down and immerse their "heads" in water when we recieve them--especially tropical flowers such as Birds of Paradise. I would caution against doing this with flowers you buy from a florist, as these flowers should already be properly hydrated. I always use the CLEAR crowning glory, it does not leave a milky finish on your flowers, and does help seal in the moisture, but I am not so sure that this product is readily available to the public? Could be wrong... the best advice? Tropical flowers and finicky flowers like hydrangea like warmer water, all other flowers, use the coldest water you can, keep your water clean and every other day when you change the water, re-cut the stems and check to make sure there are no leaves or other bits in the water, it causes bacteria to form. And for the love of all things holy, do NOT put your flowers in the fridge--your fruit and vegetables give off a gas that kills them, also do not place them in your window, or in front of your AC or heater flowers do not like drafts. Extra tip...tulips continue to grow after they are cut!! If you want them to grow straight, place them in a high sided vase, and when you first get them run them under water to get the dirt out from the leaves...it will prevent mold growth.

You can also use HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. The 3% solution you get in a brown plastic bottle at your local pharmacy. Use about an ounce in your vase. Hydrogen peroxide also helps seeds germinate much faster. Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. It's like water but with an extra oxygen atom. Cheers!

I had fresh flowers for my B-day, cut a stem an angle way and change the water about every 3rd days, my lowers lasted more than two weeks.
