3 Surprising Reasons to Give Up Soda

America has a drinking problem. No, not booze. I'm talking about soft drinks. According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, the average American guzzles 44.7 gallons of the sweet stuff every year. Not sure what 44.7 gallons looks like? It's about what you'd need to fill a small kiddie pool.

But the truth is, you don't need me to tell you that soda isn't healthy. We all know that America’s drink of choice contributes to our country's ever-expanding obesity problem. But, as Rodale.com writer Leah Zerbe discovered, love handles are just the beginning. Read on for her report on three shocking soda facts that will have you saying “Just water, please” from now on.

And for more instant secrets that will keep you healthy and fit all year long, follow me right here on Twitter or sign up for our FREE Eat This, Not That! daily newsletter to lose weight without ever dieting again.

Shocking Soda Fact #1: Soda fattens up your organs

A recent Danish study revealed that drinking non-diet soda leads to dramatic increases in dangerous hard-to-detect fats. Researchers asked participants to drink either regular soda, milk containing the same amount of calories as regular soda, diet cola, or water every day for six months. The results? Total fat mass remained the same across all beverage-consuming groups, but regular-soda drinkers experienced dramatic increases in harmful hidden fats, including liver fat and skeletal fat. The regular-soda group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol compared to the other groups! And don’t think switching to diet varieties will save you from harm: Artificial sweeteners and food dyes have been linked to brain cell damage and hyperactivity, and research has shown that people who drink diet soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Read out about the 7 biggest food label lies.

FIX IT WITH FOOD: The average American drinks 450 calories a day. By switching to water as your go-to beverage, you'll make room in your diet for these 40 Foods with Superpowers—foods that, even in moderation, can strengthen your heart, fortify your bones, and boost your metabolism so you can lose weight more quickly.

Shocking Soda Fact #2: Soda contains flame retardants

Some popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use brominated vegetable oil—a toxic flame retardant—to keep the artificial flavoring from separating from the rest of the liquid. This hazardous ingredient—sometimes listed as BVO on soda and sports drinks—can cause bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders. If that’s not a good enough reason not to “Do the Dew,” I don’t know what is. (We reveal more insidious ingredients hiding onsupermarket shelves in the 15 Scariest Food Additives).

Are you addicted to diet soda? Find out now!

DRINK DISASTERS: Soda isn’t the only dubious drink you have to watch out for. Many bottled beverages pack enough sugar and calories to foil your get-fit plans in one fell sip. Protect yourself by avoiding the 11 Worst Beverages in the Supermarket!

Shocking Soda Fact #3: Drinking soda makes you a lab rat

Many American soda brands are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, a heart-harming man-made compound derived mainly from genetically engineered corn. The problem? Genetically engineered ingredients have only been in our food chain since the 1990s, and we don't know their long-term health impacts because the corporations that developed the crops never had to test them for long-term safety. Case in point: Some recent findings suggest that genetically engineered crops are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging, and even infertility!

Ready to switch to water for good? Thought so. Here's a foolproof way to Cure Your Soda Addiction!

Drink only natural pop about once a week. This kind of pop is usually sweetened with 'pure cane sugar' and is sold usually at a health or specialty food store. Make sure you do not injest any type of sugary substance on an empty stomach. Only eat/drink a natural sugar substance after eating a full-meal. Why? If you eat/drink a sugary substance on an empty stomach the sugar is easily absorbed into the blood stream and the body has to counteract this 'energy smash' by releasing larges amounts of insulin which can cause a host of health affects like immediately increasing blood pressure, hypertension, hyperactivity, etc.

When you eat a naturally sweetened substance(honey, pure cane sugar, maple syrup, etc.) on a full stomach the sugars are not readily absorbed into the bloodstream. So no one ever said a good desert or freshy is bad for you just be careful and eat healthy and efficiently.

A good practise to start the day is to eat a substance high in protein. From an energy perspective protein is king. If you eat a good protein meal for breakfast your body will not 'need' that crazy stuff like coffee five times a day thing. When I say protein it can be anything from meats of all kinds to nuts but go easy on the carbs in the morning. This does not mean you are not to eat fruits and veggies but just try protein in the morning trick and you will hardly ever need to drink a cup of coffee or follow any stupid fad diet.

      • Gumby 3 months ago
Deny it if you want, but tree huggers will be the only living people on this planet someday. And maybe its time you considered the possibility of growing up and putting all of this childish and infantile garbage behind you.
      • spartacusnow 3 months ago
wolfram, actually tree hugging is also an excellent way to keep in contact with the earth.

Truth be told if not for the garbage people are willing to consume, and if we were to demand real food, well we would be unable to sustain a healthy society due to a lack of food. There is a method to the madness they view us as parasites. It won't be long till our Government kills us or we do. Scientists have been scratching their heads over this for sometime now. Being dependent on them for water, heat, electricity, transportation, ect ect should be a bigger concern then the bad habits others are doing. Let them eat the crap and be grateful there is still produce and meat at the grocery store.

Sad but true.. especially when the US government allows companies like Monsanto to not only operate - but to fully control the organizations that are supposed to regulate the industry FDA and protect the people USDA. Monsanto has been destroying the worlds ecosystems for decades (DDT?) - they won't be happy until they own the rights to all food production everywhere - and it will all be their Genetically Modified - Round Up ready corn, cotton, soy, wheat and canola.. There will be no real food left. Their use of insecticides to pre-treat seeds has been implicated as the major cause of bee-hive colony collapse disorder.. Did you know Monsanto bought a bee biotech firm last year and have been working on developing a bee that is resistant to their insecticides, pesticides, herbicides etc.. Can you imagine Monsanto in charge of all the pollinating bees as well? This is a very scary time indeed.

Soda? Who says Soda? It's Pop. Obviously an American author.
      • Sean 3 months ago
Kind of funny how Canadians kept the POP from Soda Pop & the Americans kept the Soda part. Cultural differences.
      • Suzanne Perot 3 months ago
Yes, probably. The message is still a good one and I hope Canucks hear it: NO SUGAR!!!

    • Catalin  •  Sherbrooke, Quebec  •  3 months ago
Simple: stop drinking such crap. I've never been any more satified than ehen I was drinking water. Water is the best drink
      • Yaniv 3 months ago
Best drink, but USUALLY not that tasty. Oh why does life have to be like that?
      • China 3 months ago
just add an ounce of scotch and you won't 'taste' the water! Never liked pop (or soda for Americans), don't really see the attraction, mostly too sweet for my taste, water or tea are my preferred drinks... and a bit of scotch now and then in the water.

Funny how they didnt mention ASPARTAME you know the chemical that was banned and then mysteriously appeared back on the shelf when Rumsfeld funded Reagan's campaign and in return Reagan passed the use of ASPARTAME in food and drink !! DIRTY POLITICS !!!!

As a dentist I cannot tell you enough about the harm even diet sodas do to your teeth. The effects of the acidity of soda drinks, diet or not is devastating to the enamel.
      • Lambo 3 months ago
I try to limit my coke consumption even though I love the stuff and the dentist is right that's why I usually rinse my mouth out after drinking the stuff to get the acid off my teeth.
      • Brrrr 3 months ago
That would take away the Dentist's paycheck, so lets find another to finance his craves

In the old days kids drank watered down beer and wine. Ever notice how kids drinks come in plastic which is also toxic? Most people don't realize how much plastic their kids drink because when these beverages are transported, they will heat up and leach chemicals!!

Do people still drink this kaka? Why?
    • Veronica  •  3 months ago
Honestly, I'm pretty sure we all know that too much of anything isn't good for any of us. The really important thing is that we follow one sentence: all things in moderation. Soda's obviously unhealthy, but drinking one can once in a while most likely won't kill you.

Always made me wonder why Diet Coke was approved the FDA?
    • sahjmom  •  Boston, United States  •  3 months ago
Now we need to tell the waitresses who give us dirty looks when we order water. No, I'm not cheap! I just DO NOT drink soda!!
    • johannkiefer chebat  •  Edmonton, Alberta  •  3 months ago
So? Its not that different since all of the toxic ingredients found in soda are being used to make everything from pillows to radios, grills to Ipods.
And all we do is throw them away and have them incinerated, releasing toxic super chemicals into the ozone and into our lungs.
Why should I stop drinking what everyone else needs.
    • in2oil  •  3 months ago
I stopped Drinking POP 5 years ago.. Lost 20lbs since... I feel better and no more heart burns. POP should be taxes like cigarettes and banned from schools.

Donald Rumsfeld was the CEO of the company that introduced "NutraSweet."
Aspartame was discovered when a scientist accidentally put his finger to his mouth
(while working on another experiment) and said "Hmm...Yummy!" Rumsfeld
now ignores its proven side effects.

I rarely drink pop. I have the occasional gingerale or tonic water. What makes me laugh is people like my father in law that insist he eats jenny craig meals and washes it down with pop.. really? How stupid is that? Or Someone that goes into McDonald's and orders a 1000 calorie meal and then asks for a diet coke with that.. who are you kidding? lol
