2 New Surprising Ways Eating Fish Can Improve Your Health

You might want to consider grilling mahi mahi or salmon steaks rather than burgers and dogs at your next barbecue. And not just for the obvious reasons—it's healthier and, duh, makes you seem like a more impressive grill master. No, there's more to it than that. Scientists just discovered that something in fish may have a help to counteract a bad mood.

The mood-enhancing ingredient in the fish is called DHA and is a type of omega-3 fatty acid. And the multi-year study, which was conducted at the Indiana University School of Medicine, concluded that DHA has a "potential therapeutic benefit", according to a release on ScienceDaily.com.

The researchers also discovered that chowing down on fish (or taking supplements—it comes in a gel cap so you don't taste anything) could help people with alcohol abuse problems resist the urge to drink.

You can do that by either buying a fish oil supplement, which are available in most grocery and health food stores or eating fish high in DHA. As a general rule of thumb, the colder the water the fish lives in, the higher the amount of DHA. Think: Alaskan salmon, herring, and mackerel.

It should be noted that the research was done on mice, but the scientists said that since the fatty acid in fish has so many other health benefits (namely, it's good for your heart) and no negative side-effects, there's no reason you shouldn't up your consumption of it in an attempt to boost your mood.
