Photo Courtesy of AGOFamily Day is still a relatively new holiday, but in just a few short years, we've seen it grow from a quiet day off, like a P.D. day for the whole family, to province-wide celebrations. Alberta's kicked things off, starting with the first Family Day in 1990, while Ontario and Saskatchewan are on their fourth and fifth observances of the holiday, respectively. With B.C. joining the party next year, will we soon see Family Day eclipse Valentine's Day in terms of holiday celebrations in February?
In order to get the most family fun out of Family Day, here are some options:
1. In our nation's capitol, there's a Funnovation Imaginarium party at the Rideau Centre. Do you really want to miss the chance to strut your stuff on a catwalk that's made of cats? A free event with quirky crafts and a dance party is a pretty safe bet for guaranteed family fun.
2. Looking for a safe place for your kids to make some noise in Ottawa? The Baobub Drum Dance Community is hosting a family drumming workshop.
3. In Toronto, kids are taking over the Art Gallery of Ontario and turning it into the Kids Gallery of Ontario for one day only! Kids will also create art for a Gallery exhibition called Kid Nouveau and hobnob with artists of the past including Picasso, Warhol and Kahlo.
4. If an outdoor skating party suits your fancy, head to the Harbourfront Centre in downtown Toronto. In addition to skating, there will be live music, comedy, movies, skateboard-making and a heck of a lot more.
5. If you're in Regina, consider bringing the family to the Science Centre. It has wall-climbing sessions for any wannabe Spider-Mans, a Titanic exhibit and a 3-D film on Tornado Alley.
6. If your kids are curious about family life in pioneer days and you happen to be in Saskatoon, head over to the Marr Residence. You can make an old-fashioned toy and eat old-fashioned cookies.
7. In Edmonton, there's a free skating party that comes with wagon rides and music. We like the idea of sipping on hot chocolate while inside of a teepee.
8. For those looking for an outdoor party in Calgary, TD Winterfest offers free skating, live music and snowman and ice castle building.
9. Elsewhere in Calgary, there's another Funnovation Imaginarium party happening at Old Navy. It's a free party where kids can create inventions, design accessories, strut their stuff on a catwalk and show off their best dance moves on the Funky Floor.
10. And, if your family just feels like a quiet day at home, you can use this newish holiday as an opportunity to create new family traditions. We recommend a long, lazy pancake brunch to start the day off right. Whatever you do, or wherever you end up going, Family Day provides a great opportunity to make new family memories.
