10 Beauty Tricks to Try when You're Traveling

Don't forget your wide-brim hat!
Don't forget your wide-brim hat!

Traveling can get a little tricky since you can't take every single beauty product you own with you-and there's no way of knowing what you'll need on the fly. These 11 tips and tricks of the trade just might come in handy anytime you're on the go.

Use Butter as Lip Balm

If your lips get parched on a plane and you realize you totally forgot to pack some lip balm, ask the flight attendant for a packet of butter (the ones that usually come with your meal). In a pinch it makes for an amazing (and yummy) substitute for a salve, since it will keep your lips soft and moist.

Swipe Deodorant on...Your Face

If you're spending time in a super-hot location, try this celebrity makeup artist trick: Swipe your deodorant clean, and then swipe it over spots you're likely to sweat on your face (like your forehead and upper lip). The ingredients that keep your underarms from sweating will work the same way on your face. (Just don't do this step everyday, since you could breakout.) Then, apply moisturizer and makeup over top, as per usual.

Go for Cream...Not Lotion

Apply a heavier moisturizer (than what you normally slather on) the night before you travel. This increases your skin's hydration before the effects of road-tripping dehydrate it.

Enlist a Mist

Toting a travel mineral mist helps keep skin from dehydrating -and keeps you from globing on more moisturizer than you actually need when you realize your skin is flaky.

Take Towelettes on Your Trip

These babies come in handy, trust us: Spilled your drink? No problem! Need to wipe your face clean to freshen up? Done.

Be a Nudist

...on your nails, that is! Skip bright polish on your fingertips (wear on it your toes instead, since color tends to last longer there anyway) and go for a barely there shade on your fingers. Chips are less likely to be detected when you're wearing a pretty nude hue.

Keep Hand Sanitizer Handy

To avoid getting unsightly pimples while you're on vacay, NYC-based dermatologist Francesca Fusco, M.D. advises against touching your skin while you travel. "You can pick up any number of unknown  bacteria that can result in any number of skin problems after you arrive."

Carry on a Dry Shampoo

Often times your hair can look limp when you're traveling, so as soon as you arrive at your destination, flip your head upside down, and spray it all over. Voilà-volume!

Use Your Flat Iron as a Regular Iron

If your clothes are a little wrinkled after you've unpacked and there isn't a regular iron in sight, use your travel flat iron to smooth your collar, sleeves, and hemline.

Mask Roots with Mascara

Got roots you just noticed? If you have dark hair, use your mascara (black or brown, depending on your color) to cover up exposed regrowth-stat.
