'Vanity Fair's' Justin Bieber Cover: Worst-Selling in 12 Years

Vanity Fair When Vanity Fair splashed Justin Bieber on its February cover, it came as a bit of a surprise. While the magazine doesn't necessarily shy away from younger-skewing covers (recent cover girls Katy Perry and Emma Stone come to mind), Bieber's pubescent, grinning mug seemed especially out-of-place on the staid glossy's front.

Well, it appears the risk did not pay off. WWDreports that Vanity Fair's Bieber issue is poised to become the worst-selling issue in 12 years and one of the three worst-selling issues since Graydon Carter became editor-in-chief in 1992.

The Bieber cover has sold 246,000 issues, the fewest since Will Smith's July 1999 cover in support of "Wild, West West" (202,701 copies).

WWD notes that Bieber's covers for Teen Vogue and People this year also sold below those publications' averages.

For what it's worth, Vanity Fair doesn't seem to be too shaken up abou the disappointment.

"Who knew 12-year-olds didn't buy magazines?" said a Vanity Fair spokeswoman.
